The lion’s share: Ben Mills (Enterprise SDR)

The lion’s share: A day in the life of… Ben Mills (Enterprise SDR)

This blog series gives insight into the day-to-day life of LoyaltyLion’s employees. We’ll look at members from all teams – diving into their roles and responsibilities – how they started their careers and what they do in their spare time.

So let’s meet Ben Mills, an Enterprise Sales Development Representative (SDR) at LoyaltyLion.

What is your morning routine?

I get up between 7 and 7:30 am if I’m working from home. Although this is slowly getting later and later as the Winter mornings get darker.

The first thing I do is say hello to my cat, Brodie, pictured below. I feed him some breakfast and make myself a coffee.

If I’m feeling energetic, I’ll go for a run before starting work. Otherwise, I push it back until the evening. If I’m not running, I’ll wander to my favorite café for a pastry and scroll through the news on my phone.

Why does what you do matter?

My current role at LoyaltyLion is Enterprise SDR. I prospect big companies with lots of employees that need a lot of considered outreach in order to get them to book a meeting.

It’s a fantastic role because I’m free to use whatever strategy I think is best to get a response from them. Often, the more creative the idea, the better!

It’s an opportunity to directly impact the growth of the company, so I’m really excited to be working on it.

How did you get the job?

I worked in the fitness industry before joining LoyaltyLion and I started a small, online training service in the middle of the pandemic. Setting up a business was really exciting. I loved the feeling of getting out what you put in and appreciating small wins. But after a while, I began to miss working in a team.

After a few weeks of looking on LinkedIn, I saw the job advert for an SDR position at LoyaltyLion. A few rounds of interviews later, I was offered the job and the rest is history!

What does a typical day look like?

An important part of being an SDR is organization, so I structure my days to roughly follow the same pattern.

In the morning, I’ll send emails and LinkedIn messages. Then, since most of our prospects and clients are based in the US, I’ll hit the phones in the afternoon when the East Coast wakes up.

I’ll also sit in on calls with companies I’ve booked meetings with to learn more about sales best practices. Continued learning is a huge part of career progression at LoyaltyLion.

I’ll take a couple of breaks in the day to grab a coffee or go for a short walk, and usually clock off around 6 pm.

How do you spend your evening?

This varies a lot! If I’m in the office, we’ll often have a few drinks in the kitchen after work or head to the pub. Socializing with my team is what I missed most when working from home – Zoom quizzes just don’t cut it!

At home, I’ll sometimes go for a run, either by myself, with my girlfriend or a friend. After that, I’ll cook dinner, grab a drink with friends or watch something on Netflix.

Before bed, I’ll read for a while to properly wind down. I’m just about to finish Bonfire of the Vanities.

What’s your proudest achievement at LoyaltyLion?

Being chosen to start the Enterprise Team was a big achievement, and I really appreciate the trust being put in me. However, there’s no better feeling in sales than getting a “yes” from a prospect you’ve been chasing for months. Whenever I get one of those moments, it’s an achievement in itself!

Tell us your favorite thing about LoyaltyLion.

At LoyaltyLion, we’re keen on letting people carve out their own role within the organization. It’s up to you to decide which career path you want to take, and the support and guidance from managers is excellent.

The culture is also highly collaborative. We’re growing quickly, but all teams speak to each other daily and everyone’s opinions are heard and valued.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of joining the company?

When I had my first interview, the need for a growth mindset at LoyaltyLion was strongly emphasized. We’re growing very fast, and with that comes a lot of change so be prepared to adapt quickly. It’s also the best way to learn. So get ready to jump in at the deep end!
